				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>SimpleXML is a PHP extension that &#8220;provides a very simple and easily usable toolset to convert XML to an object&#8221; [1]. Thus you can pass a link to an XML file and SimpleXML will return an object.</p>
<pre lang="php">$xml = simplexml_load_file('path_to_the_file');</pre>
<p>Sometimes you&#8217;d need to dump or save the entire XML as a string, but there’s no toString method! As you can see $xml is an instance of the SimpleXMLElement class.</p>
<pre lang="php">var_dump($xml); // object(SimpleXMLElement)...</pre>
<p>Actually if you take a closer look:</p>
<pre lang="php">$xml->toString();</pre>
<p>will return <strong>&#8220;Call to an undefined method toString()&#8221;</strong>, which is frustrating because the developers community is used to use toString() when converting an object into a string.</p>
<figure id="attachment_2395" style="width: 448px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/XML.jpg"><img src="/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/XML.jpg" alt="XML" title="XML" width="448" height="269" class="size-full wp-image-2395" srcset="/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/XML.jpg 448w, /wp-content/uploads/2011/10/XML-300x180.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-caption-text">PHP&#039;s SimpleXML doesn&#039;t have toString() method. asXML() is used instead!</figcaption></figure>
<h2>The solution</h2>
<p>In fact there’s a method doing exactly what’s needed. This is <a title="SimpleXMLElement::asXML()" href="http://www.php.net/manual/en/simplexmlelement.asxml.php" target="_blank">SimpleXMLElement::asXML</a></p>
<p>As described in the manual page: &#8220;SimpleXMLElement::asXML — Return a well-formed XML string based on SimpleXML element&#8221; [2].</p>
<p>Besides that it does exactly what&#8217;s needed it sounds irrelevant, because you&#8217;ve an XML object and the name &#8220;asXML&#8221; doesn&#8217;t describe correctly what&#8217;s expected.</p>
<pre lang="php">$xml->asXML() // ?!</pre>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h2>On Focus</h2>
<p><a href="/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/onfocus.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-2177" title="onfocus" src="/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/onfocus.jpg" alt="onfocus" width="450" height="253" srcset="/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/onfocus.jpg 450w, /wp-content/uploads/2011/02/onfocus-300x168.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px" /></a></p>
<p>Perhaps you think of onfocus and onblur events as a default behavior existing in any web page. This is not quite true! Onfocurs and onblur are well known in web developing (js) and are fired, of course, when the user tries to point something or leaves some element. Onfocurs is fired when the user either goes to an element with the Tab button on with the mouse. When the element is on focus, evidently, the onfocus event is fired. Actually you can see which element is on focus, like an anchor or input, when the element is outlined by the browser by default. In the same scenario, when some element has been on focus and than the user switches to another element, the onblur event is fired. Thus you may guess that this element is no longer on focus.<span id="more-2160"></span></p>
<p>This in general are the onfocus/onblur events. The interesting part is that by default are known as built-in events in every page, but that is wrong.</p>
<h2>Where Are My Events?</h2>
<p>A typical use case is to take the code from some web page, where you&#8217;re sure this works perfectly, you can focus and blur element with no obstacle, but once you paste it inside your markup everything&#8217;s going wrong. Imagine you&#8217;ve the following markup (a typical search box text):</p>
<pre lang="html4strict">
<input type="text" onblur="if(this.value=='') this.value = 'Search in This Site';" onfocus="if(this.value=='Search in This Site') this.value = '';" />
</pre>
<p>This works perfectly until you paste it to your site. And than nothing works correctly. Why? Where&#8217;s the problem?</p>
<h2>Make Them Work</h2>
<p>Actually the problem isn&#8217;t hiding somewhere in the markup above. It&#8217;s in the HTML definition. There are lots of web pages using strict HTML definition, that looks like this:</p>
<pre lang="html4strict">
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
	...
</head>
<body>
	...
</pre>
<p>while you&#8217;ve to use the pure HTML definition to make onfocus/onblur work.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ve to switch to:</p>
<pre lang="html4strict">
<html>
<head>
	...
</head>
<body>
	...
</pre>
<p>Than you can continue using these useful events!</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h2>Selectors in jQuery</h2>
<p><a href="/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/jquery.png"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1999" title="jquery" src="/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/jquery.png" alt="jQuery JavaScript Library" width="259" height="65" /></a></p>
<p>If you&#8217;re familiar with <a title="jQuery" href="http://jquery.com/" target="_blank">jQuery</a> you should already know what are selectors and how they work. However we&#8217;re used to get some DOM element with a specific selector, but actually sometimes you cannot select directly what you need. This is especially true when mixing more than one JavaScript libraries. In my case <a title="OpenLayers" href="http://openlayers.org/" target="_blank">OpenLayers</a> generated a vector layer and jQuery was supposed to change the vectors fill-color property.</p>
<p><a href="/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/openlayers.png"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-2000" title="openlayers" src="/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/openlayers.png" alt="OpenLayers" width="195" height="37" /></a></p>
<p>With the simple $(&#8216;path&#8217;) I easily got all vectors in the current document, but the problem was that I took them as text. Thus it came to me to use nested jQuery &#8211; $($(&#8216;selector&#8217;));</p>
<p>To describe what actually happened in my case, let me show you a breve example.</p>
<h2>Example</h2>
<p>Here&#8217;s a short HTML markup:</p>
<pre lang="html4strict">
<div><span>text text</span></div>

</pre>
<p>With jQuery I can select both the DIV and SPAN with the simple $(&#8216;div&#8217;) and $(&#8216;span&#8217;), but just for the example lets assume I&#8217;ve only the inner text of the DIV tag:</p>
<pre lang="javascript">$('div').html();
</pre>
<p>That was the case in the OpenLayers/jQuery problem. Now I can easily use another jQuery selector:</p>
<pre lang="javascript">$($('div').html());
</pre>
<p>This will return the same as $(&#8216;span&#8217;) &#8211; a jQuery object.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a title="Raphael.js" href="http://raphaeljs.com/index.html" target="_blank">Raphael</a> is a popular JavaScript library helping you to manage vectors via SVG or VML in your browser. It is extremely helpful and very easy to learn and use. The interesting thing is that in the browser you can do very powerful things with vectors, but they remain very less known. However with such libraries like Raphael the task is really simple.</p>
<h2>Animation</h2>
<p>As I said animating some vector properties is as simple as:</p>
<pre lang="javascript">var paper = Raphael('canvas', 1024, 500);
var c = paper.circle(50, 50, 6).attr({fill : '#f00'});
c.animate({r : 10, fill : '#00f'}, 1000);
</pre>
<p>Here we change the radius and the background color of the circle for 1000 milliseconds.</p>
<p>The same thing can be done with any property with any other JavaScript library as <a title="jQuery" href="http://jquery.com/" target="_blank">jQuery</a>. But as in jQuery, Raphael or whatever library the animation is not looping. That&#8217;s natural you can just change a property by animating it, but the looping animation suggests at least two animations. So it&#8217;s a developers job to implement this. Here&#8217;s a simple way to do this.</p>
<h2>Two Way Animation</h2>
<p>The solution here is using two functions calling each other.</p>
<pre lang="javascript">
var paper = Raphael('canvas', 1024, 500);
var c = paper.circle(50, 50, 6).attr({fill : '#f00'});

function a() {
    c.animate({r : 10, fill : '#00f'}, 1000, b);
}
function b() {
    c.animate({r : 6, fill : '#f00'}, 1000, a);
}
a();
</pre>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There are three basic ways that you can achieve that. First of all what&#8217;s the task? You&#8217;ve an array, either from a database result or whatever, and you encode it JSON with Zend_Json::encode($array)</p>
<pre lang="php">
// IndexController.php
class IndexController extends Zend_Controller_Action
{
	public function indexAction()
	{
		$data = array(...);

		$this->view->data = Zend_Json::encode($data);
	}
}
</pre>
<p>The result in general is a specially formatted string. So you can simply set it up to a view member variable and pass it to the view.</p>
<pre lang="php">
// index/index.phtml
echo $this->data
</pre>
<p>In that case you&#8217;ve a .phtml file to maintain, so lets just return the string and &#8220;setNoRender&#8221; the view in our second try.</p>
<pre lang="php">
// IndexController.php
class IndexController extends Zend_Controller_Action
{
	public function indexAction()
	{
		$data = array(...);

		echo Zend_Json::encode($data);

		$this->_helper->viewRenderer->setNoRender(true);
	}
}
</pre>
<p>Actually this is pretty much the most clear solution, but actually you can output the JSON string and simply exit() as it&#8217;s shown in our third example.</p>
<pre lang="php">
// IndexController.php
class IndexController extends Zend_Controller_Action
{
	public function indexAction()
	{
		$data = array(...);

		echo Zend_Json::encode($data);

		exit();
	}
}
</pre>
<p>Which one is to be used is up to the developer&#8217;s choice, mine is the third one as it&#8217;s the minimal one.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h2>What&#8217;s the Task?</h2>
<p>First of all let me explain what is the task. If there&#8217;s a select menu with several options, each of which are with a given value attribute, the task is to get the text into the option tag, and not that of the value attribute.</p>
<p>In that scenario let&#8217;s assume that we have the following HTML:</p>
<pre lang="html4strict">
<select id="my-select">
    <option value="1">value 1</option>
    <option value="2">value 2</option>
</select>
</pre>
<p><a href="/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Picture-1.png"><img src="/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Picture-1.png" alt="select menu" title="Select Menu" width="181" height="95" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1671" /></a><br />
Note that in the official jQuery doc page, the selector is described in the same context, but with a different markup:</p>
<pre lang="html4strict">
<select id="my-select">
    <option>value 1</option>
    <option>value 2</option>
</select>
</pre>
<p>than the jQuery snippet looks like that:</p>
<pre lang="javascript">
$(document).ready(function() {
    $("#my-select").change(function() {
        alert($(this).val());
    });
});
</pre>
<p>Here&#8217;s interesting to note that there&#8217;s no value attribute set to the options, thus the selection of an element is correct and the returned value is correct. The problem is that this code doesn&#8217;t work correctly once you&#8217;ve a different value attribute, from the value enclosed into the option tag. In our case we&#8217;ve the markup shown on the first code snippet and we&#8217;d like to get the &#8220;value 2&#8221; string instead of &#8220;2&#8221;.<br />
<a href="/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Picture-2.png"><img src="/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Picture-2.png" alt="" title="Alert screen" width="329" height="130" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1672" srcset="/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Picture-2.png 329w, /wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Picture-2-300x118.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 329px) 100vw, 329px" /></a></p>
<h2>Source Code</h2>
<pre lang="html4strict">
<select id="my-select">
    <option value="1">value 1</option>
    <option value="2">value 2</option>
</select>
</pre>
<pre lang="javascript">
$(document).ready(function() {
    $("#my-select").change(function() {
        alert($(this).val());
    });
});
</pre>
<h2>Solution</h2>
<p>Finally the solution, is pretty simple and clear, but this time is not to so &#8220;native&#8221; and it&#8217;s definitely something you couldn&#8217;t expect! The only thing you&#8217;ve to do is to change the selector!</p>
<pre lang="javascript">
$(document).ready(function() {
    $("#my-select).change(function() {
        alert($('#my-select option:selected').html());
    });
});
</pre>

By me the most simple way to sanitize the user input is to save everything in the database with no loosing of tags or whatever HTML markup and than on displaying this on the client side to strip_tags if needed.</p>
<p>In example when saving a HTML formatted text you can use simply the htmlspecialchars method</p>
<pre lang="php">$description = htmlspecialchars($_POST['description']);</pre>
<p>Than you can be sure everything&#8217;s in the database, but it&#8217;s not actually HTML. Thus you don&#8217;t have any tags at all in the database field.</p>
<p>When you show this in the client side and you&#8217;d like to strip some tags, i.e. to keep only the &lt;a&gt; tag you can do this:</p>
<pre lang="php" escaped="true">echo strip_tags(htmlspecialchars_decode($description), '&lt;a&gt;');</pre>
<p>That&#8217;s the most simple way to keep everything as the original source. By me it&#8217;s better to keep whatever HTML markup there is on the input.</p>
